If you haven’t used or heard of the keyboard trackpad we’re going to give you a rundown on what it is, why you’ll want to use it and most importantly how to activate it.

All you’ll need is an iPhone or iPad and you’re good to go.

What is the iPhone trackpad and why you’ll want to use it

The trackpad that’s built into your default Apple keyboard, gives you granular control over where the cursor is placed.

If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to fix a spelling mistake or add a word into a sentence, then this feature will be a life saver.

While you might have deadly accurate fingers while using your phone, I certainly don’t, which is why this feature has made my life a little easier. As you can see above, it’s quick and easy to place the cursor in the right spot to fix any mistake.

What’s great is the fact it’s already built into the phone, ready for you to use right now.

How to use it

The trackpad can be activated by simply

  1. Hold down the spacebar on the keyboard for a few seconds
  2. The keyboard keys will blank out and allow you to move the cursor with your finger
  3. Once you lift your finger off the screen, the keyboard comes back and you’re good to go.

It does take a bit to get used to but once you’ve done it a few times it doesn’t take a second thought.

Limitations

I didn’t find many but there’s one that stuck out to me and that’s when you need to scroll a lot, like when editing a large website URL.

As this feature is designed for granular control it would be faster to use your finger to get to the start / end of the URL or large string of text, as opposed to scrolling along with the trackpad.

It’s a solid feature

All said and done, it’s a feature that’s built in with no extra work needed to enable it. If you don’t want to use it you don’t have to, but if you need some granular control over your cursor it’s there when you need it.

Hand feature that has no real downsides, aside from forgetting it’s there.
